Dieng’s Crucial Third Hands Senegal First African Victory

Senegalese forward, Bamba Dieng netted the third goal to hand Aliou Cissé’s men their first victory as a team and as an African team at the Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

Boulaye Dia gave the African champions the lead four minutes before halftime by thumping home to make up for Boualem Khoukhi’s errant clearing.

When former Bristol City striker Famara Diedhiou rose to flick home a beautiful header just three minutes after halftime, Qatar’s chances of bouncing back in the second period were crushed.

Ismaila Sarr of Watford missed an early opportunity to score in his 50th appearance, while Idrissa Gueye of Everton missed the target with a rasping shot.

When Sarr shoved Akram Afif in the box in the first half, Qatar thought they should have been awarded a penalty, but Spanish referee Antonio Lahoz only awarded a goal-kick, much to the ire of the home crowd.

Almoez Ali and Ismaeel Mohammad were both denied by incredible reflex saves from Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, but he was unable to stop Mohammed Muntari’s thunderous header.

Qatar was attempting to get the equaliser, but Bamba Dieng’s goal deflated the home crowd and sent Qatar to the bottom of the group after two games.

After losing to Senegal for the second time in a row, Qatar is now in danger of losing its World Cup group.

The Middle East team fought bravely, but if the Netherlands win against Ecuador later on Friday, they will be eliminated with one match remaining.
