Sokoto state former Deputy Governor, Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, has won Sokoto All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary.
Aliyu, who was the party’s 2019 governorship flag bearer, scored 1080 votes to clinch the party’s ticket.
The immediate past and pioneer Executive Secretary Police Trust Fund defeated five other contestants.
They include Senator Ibrahim Abdullahi Gobir, 36; Umar Abubakar Gada, 0; Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, 16; Amb. Farouk Malami Yabo, 27 and Abubakar Abdullahi Gumbi, 01 respectively with 23 invalid votes.
The election committee chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Kyari, said based on the APC constitution as amended: “I hereby declare Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto as the eligible and duly elected as the party’s flag bearer for the 2023 general elections.”
However, one of the aspirants, Hon. Abdullahi Balarabe Salame withdrew from the race on the day of the primaries.
No fewer than 1183 delegates from the 23 local government areas participated in the exercise conducted monitored by INEC officials.
Aliyu expressed gratitude for the remarkable sense of commitment shown by members of the party and delegates for driving the process to success.
He noted that his emergence was the will of God while adding “it has opened a new chapter in the party’s struggle in bringing back the desired glory to the state.
”I also solicit the collective support of other aspirants by working tirelessly for the victory of the party come 2023.”
Ahmad Aliyu is to face the immediate past Secretary to Sokoto State Government, Alhaji Sa’idu Umar Ubandoma, of the People’s Democratic Party in what is expected to be a fierce battle to the Lodge Road.
