The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has said that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar can do without his help in the upcoming 2023 presidential election.
HausaToday recalls that the PDP has been in a state of turbulence after the presidential primaries which produced Atiku as the flag bearer of the party.
However, Wike was displeased with the outcome and insisted that the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal had collaborated with the party chairman, Iyrorchia Ayu to manipulate the election in favour of Atiku.
The crisis took a turn for the worse after Atiku chose Delta state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.
Wike and his camp demanded that the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu has to resign from his position and replaced by a southerner, as the presidential candidate is a northerner. They insisted that it is the only way balance could be returned to the party.
However, Ayu and Atiku have refused to comply with Wike’s demands.
Yesterday, Wike and his supporters announced that they have withdrawn from Atiku’s presidential campaign, citing Ayu’s refusal to step down from his position as the reason for their decision.
Speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt on Friday, Wike said it is only possible for Atiku to do without him in other states but definitely not in Rivers State.
He said, “Yes, I agree. Atiku can do without me. They can do without me in the other states but not Rivers State.”
